How Much Does Shuttle Racking Cost? A Transparent Breakdown per Pallet Position

The headline numbers

Across the industry, shuttle racking systems are generally budgeted at US$120–350 per pallet position, all-in for racking, shuttles and standard installation. Where a project lands inside that band depends on the variables below — and any quote given without knowing them is a guess.

For orientation: a typical entry project of one 40HQ container of racking (roughly 1,200–1,500 pallet positions) plus one radio shuttle lands in the US$75,000–110,000 range. Four-way systems with lifts, conveyors and WCS integration are engineered per project and typically priced above the two-way band at low position counts, closing the gap as scale grows.

What moves the price

• Lane depth & density — deeper lanes spread aisle and shuttle costs over more positions, lowering unit cost.
• Height — every additional level adds steel, but also adds positions over the same footprint; high-bay (20 m+) changes the structural class entirely.
• Temperature — chilled and freezer stores need different steel treatment, surface protection and shuttle specifications; deep-freeze adds roughly 10–20%.
• Shuttle count — throughput is bought with shuttles, not steel. Peak-hour requirements decide how many cars a system needs.
• Seismic zone — seismic design adds steel, anchors and engineering hours.
• Compliance documentation — AS 4084 / FEM / RMI project documentation and local-language FEA reports are part of a compliant budget, not an optional extra.

The costs buyers forget

Ocean freight and container utilization: racking is dense, heavy freight. Container loading engineering — how many tons of finished racking fit a 40HQ without damage — moves landed cost by several percent and is a real differentiator between manufacturers.

Installation and commissioning: budget separately for installation crews (or supervised local installation) and shuttle commissioning. A transparent supplier separates these line items so you can compare offers honestly.
